About
We are the 24 Hour Race organisation in Singapore, managed by a committee of students based in local and international school students in Singapore. The 24 hour race event was first established in Singapore in 2013 and since then, the event has been held annually, with a growth in the number of our community. Our goal is to raise awareness on modern day slavery.
In the 21st century, there is a lack of understanding surrounding slavery, as the extreme forms have been abolished nearly two centuries ago. However, the issue of violation of the basic human rights is still prevalent today in our society in many different shapes and forms:
Human trafficking for sex, organs, drugs
Forced labour through mental/physical threat
Forced marriage
Involuntary sex trade
With the estimate of 40.3 million enslaved across the globe as of 2016, there is a high concentration of slaves (73%) located in Southeast Asia, especially in the form of exploitation of domestic workers among us. In Singapore, 5% of our population consists of foreign domestic workers employed, and it is important to acknowledge the exploitation of domestic workers in our local communities.
Ironically, Singapore is listed as one of the countries that give little to no priority to this issue in hand. As the future leaders of this world, we hold the responsibility to act upon slavery, raising awareness, making an impact, and empowering other young people.
HOW WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Through the 24 hour race, for the 2023 race runners are expected to raise SGD 2,000 per group, which will go towards supporting other NGOs that work for the same cause including Justice Centre, Right4Children, and Chab Dai Coalition.
As well as the economic aid we give to the cause as a community, the event itself encourages students to push their physical boundaries to their limits, to better understand and sympathize with the victims of modern slavery.
The goal is to create a generation of young people who are more aware of global issues such as modern day slavery, and empower them to act upon it, and ultimately abolish slavery worldwide.
